1,713 Potential Irrelevant Citation Vehicles

Recently, the 5GH Team has identified about 1,713 potential irrelevant citation vehicles [1], articles massively citing irrelevant references.

A few days ago, Smut Clyde released two documents about articles offered (Citation Provider [2]) and received (Citation Consumer [3]) irrelevant citations. The Team extracted 2,832 DOIs from the Citation Consumer document (no DOIs were available for the remaining 500+ entries), and using the OpenAlex database, the Team retrieved the DOIs of the articles that cite each entry in the Citation Consumer document, and found 157,662 articles cite at least one article listed in the Citation Consumer document. After excluding those already listed in either the Citation Provider or the Citation Consumer documents, the Team finally identified 1,713 articles cite at least 10 articles from the Citation Consumer document list. These 1,713 articles as potential irrelevant citation vehicles are listed on the Supporting Information [1].

The Team wishes to clarify that further investigations are required to verify whether all or part of these 1,713 articles were used as irrelevant citation vehicles. We are releasing this list at an early stage to solicit greater efforts from the scientific community to conduct further checks on these articles.
