China's Diamond Open Access Accounts for 1% of the Global Total
DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals) includes a total of 14,667 diamond open access journals, of which 1,243 are from Brazil, followed by Indonesia (1,217), Spain (982), Poland (795), and the United States (676). China has 131 diamond open access journals indexed in DOAJ, accounting for less than 1% of the global total.
In terms of publication volume, between 2016 and 2025, the annual output of diamond open access journals worldwide grew from approximately 219,000 articles to approximately 352,000 articles. Among them, the total output of Chinese journals increased from 1,783 articles to 4,902 articles, a 1.7-fold increase, accounting for approximately 1.4% of global output (2025 data).
