Mass Editor Resignations at Academic Journals on the Rise

Mass editor resignations at academic journals have risen in recent years. Since 2000, there have been 78 such events, peaking at 14 in 2023.

Of those 78 events, 19 occurred at Wiley journals, followed by Elsevier (14), Taylor & Francis (10), and Springer Nature (10).

Violations of editorial independence were the main trigger for these mass editor resignations, contributing to 17 of the 78 events. In addition, high open-access (OA) article processing charges (APCs) were another reason.

Please find the Supporting Information [1] for more details about these events.
