China Ranks among the Top Collaborating Countries for US Universities
Recent sources indicate that the U.S. government intends to prohibit U.S. scientists from collaborating with researchers at Chinese universities and institutions included on several federal government-maintained lists. Nonetheless, critics worry that such restrictions could stifle innovation within American academia.
An investigation by the 5GH Team found that China ranks among the top collaborating countries for U.S. universities. Based on publication records (obtianed from OpenAlex) from 13 institutions (including UC Berkeley, Columbia University, Cornell University, Duke University, Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northwestern University, University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, Stanford University, University of Chicago, and Yale University), nearly 10% of their papers involved Chinese co-authors, and China ranked between 3rd and 5th among their international collaborators.
