Earn 15 USD by Citing an Article
Recently, the 5GH Team noticed that some users on RedNote (also known as Xiaohongshu), a popular Chinese social media platform, were looking for authors who had submitted manuscripts to academic journals and asking them to cite their clients' articles.
The Team contacted one of these RedNote users, who provide us a list [1] of 58 articles available for citation, and claimed that we can earn CNY 100 (about USD 15) for citing each of those articles. The articles cover a wide range of fields, and the user indicated that we could select those relevant to our manuscript. The list also contained a note stating that only SCI- or SSCI-indexed articles were acceptable and that the citation statement should include no negative comments.
Nowadays, this kind of citation promotion service is widespread in China. It differs from citation manipulation practices that occur during peer review, where abnormal citation patterns can often be detected. The 5GH Team is therefore seeking a scientometric strategy to identify such improper citation practices.
