22.6 GW of Chinese Power Projects in Africa Already Grid-Connected
To date, among the power construction projects in Africa in which China has participated, completed and grid-connected capacity has reached 22.6 GW (92 projects). In addition, projects under construction have a capacity of 7.6 GW (34 projects), and projects totaling 8.4 GW (33 projects) are in the planning and approval stages.
These projects are spread across 54 African countries. Among them, Ethiopia has the largest capacity of commissioned and under-construction projects, involving 12 projects with a cumulative capacity of 7.9 GW, followed by Angola (5 projects with a cumulative capacity of 5 GW), Egypt (6 projects with a cumulative capacity of 1.9 GW), Zimbabwe (4 projects with a cumulative capacity of 1.8 GW), and Nigeria (3 projects with a cumulative capacity of 1.7 GW).
Hydropower is the main technology route for Chinese power projects in Africa. By installed capacity, hydropower accounts for about 69%; by number of projects, hydropower accounts for about 37%. This is followed by solar PV (10% of installed capacity and 23% of the number of projects) and gas (10% of installed capacity and 10% of the number of projects).
In terms of participation methods, for about 44% of the projects, the Chinese side participated as the EPC general contractor (engineering, procurement, and construction); for another approximately 34% of the projects, the Chinese side participated through EPC general contracting plus financing. Among them, the Export-Import Bank of China is the main financing institution, involved in the financing of projects with a capacity of 16 GW.
