Massive Self-Citations to Khamdamov
The 5GH Team came across the profile of Shoh-jakhon Khamdamov at Tashkent State University of Economics, and noted the abnormal pattern of the citations to Khamdamov. The profile shows that Khamdamov got 382 citations in the year of 2024, the number is 5 times higher than that in the 2023, and he only got 6 citations in 2022.
In order to figure the reasons behind the dramatic increase of citations to Khamdamov, the 5GH Team extracted the OpenAlex records of all Khamdamov's publications. This records include which articles cite Khamdamov's publications. And thus, the team get a list of articles citing Khamdamov's publication, and the number how many references in these articles were coauthored by Khamdamov.
The team finds 14 articles over citing Khamdamov's publications. Over 30% of each article's references were coauthored by Khamdamov. In the article [1], the propotion even reaches to as high as 53%, namely, 9 of the 17 references were coauthored by Khamdamov.
What is more interesting, these 14 articles over citing Khamdamov's publications were also coauthored by Khamdamov himself, implying that he got the high number of citations through a practice of high self-citations.
The team wants to address that, the self-citations and the number of articles over citing Khamdamov's publications may be underestimated due to the limitation of our method, which was also applied in the previous investigation [2], because of missing records of Khamdamov's publications or the articles citing Khamdamov's publications on OpenAlex Database.
